Dogville (Lars von Trier) Von Trier constantly confronts his audience, challenging us to understand a reality about humanity we'd much rather ignore (and deny). Americans especially are unlikely to ever warm to this stark message. It's not a remotely hopeful film - except that knowing the truth is the only place to start. Performances are raw and achingly honest; the production design is evocative and unlike anything we've seen on film. Love it or hate it, this is a masterpiece. 2.
