bafta
Nominations Wed 9.Jan.19 • Awards Sun 10 Feb 19 at Royal Albert Hall

Notes from Rich: Bafta went mainstream this year, with a line-up of nominations for populist fare like Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born and Green Book, while ignoring work in acclaimed films like You Were Never Really Here, First Reformed or If Beale Street Could Talk. The also showed that they have a very short memory, forgetting about early-in-the-year stunners like A Fantastic Woman, 120 Beats per Minute and Faces Places. There were some quirky winners, from Roma taking both Film and Foreign Film to hometown favourites Richard E Grant and Christian Bale going home empty-handed. Once again, the BBC and Bafta opted to broadcast the ceremony tape-delayed and heavily edited. which requires avoiding social media all afternoon. Joanna Lumley was slightly more relaxed this year, thankfully, although the script was even worse - each category presenter visually cringed at the awful jokes they had to deliver. Please bring this show into the 21st century next year...
