golden globes Nominations 9.Dec.24 • Winners 5.Jan.25
First presented in 1944, the Golden Globes went through many ups and downs before being reorganised for the 2023 ceremony, at which time 100 international journalists doubled the voting base. These voters come from every continent, and have changed the awards' focus, adding more international/arthouse work into the mix. For 2024, the number increased to 300, two-thirds of whom are outside the US. The awards are now owned by Dick Clark Productions, with revenue going to film restoration projects, education and humanitarian efforts.

Notes by Rich: I joined the Globes in its first class of international voters, and have been impressed by the group's serious efforts relating to ethics, transparency and conflicts of interest. (The HFPA no longer exists.) It's been nice to participate in these diversely flavoured awards, even with that absurd "musical/comedy" label. Although eligibility remains set on US release dates, the 334 voters live in 85 countries. This international perspective is reflected nicely throughout the nominations and the offbeat set of winners.
