I'm not completely sure what Carpenter was thinking here, but this is easily the funniest non-comic action thriller I've seen in ages. It's the year 2176 and everyone on Mars dresses like it's 1982. The cops carry guns and radios that are obsolete today. But never mind. There's trouble at the mine, and an ubercop (Grier) is sent to bring the bad guy (Ice Cube) back for trial. Her entourage includes a feisty team leader (Henstridge), a randy sergeant (Statham) and two bonehead rookies (the wasted DuVall and the anonymous Waite). Of course the mine is abandoned except for a wise scientist (Cassidy) who can explain everything, the prisoner gets out and soon they're all working together to battle Martian zombies who want their planet back.

Nothing here is obviously done for laugh value, but did anyone really take this seriously while filming? It's absolutely ludicrous--the dialog is just a string of one-liners, the facial expressions are all comic takes (mostly snarling), the action sequences are full of gigantic fireballs caused by detonators stuck into cans of fruit cocktail, and the zombies all look like Marilyn Manson wannabes. It's absolutely hilarious, from the corny story to the cheesy special effects. It's also sheer mayhem as the nonstop action escalates into cast-of-thousands stuff, with outrageous stunt work and explosions on every side, all on a tacky Mars surface film set. Yes, Carpenter certainly keeps things moving! He never generates any suspense along the way, but he does keep us laughing.
