all bets are on You could call this stunner of a film "accessible David Lynch", surreal and insinuating yet wonderfully easy to understand. It also adds a new name to the list of terrific existential Spanish filmmakers like Alejandro Amenabar (Open Your Eyes) and Julio Medem (Sex and Lucia). This is a story of luck, fate and death. Federico (Poncela) has a gift that allows him to take away someone's luck with a touch, so naturally he's employed by the sinister casino owner Sam (Von Sydow), who seems to be luck personified. After they have a falling out, Federico goes on a quest to find the luckiest man alive so he can finally get even with Sam. He settles on Tomas (Sbaraglia), the lone survivor of a plane crash who's wanted for bank robbery by a tenacious cop (Lopez), who was also lucky to survive a car crash. She's right on their trail as Federico and Tomas work their way back to the isolated casino by way of a labyrinthine underground gambling network.

There's a lot more to this film than its plot, as first-time feature director Fresnadillo toys with the theme that we can steal each others' luck and then gamble with it! It's an ingenious idea realised on screen with beauty and emotion that really grabs us and shakes us, making us think about why we do what we do. Do we sit back and rely on fate too much when we should be taking control of our lives? This is gorgeously played out on screen with a powerfully involving story and acutely focussed performances. Meanwhile, the cinematography is absolutely beautiful, capturing the Canary Island locations as if it was the surface of the moon, which in a way it is. Every "game" they play along the road is telling in a very specific way, marvelously captured by the script, direction and actors to propel us further in the story and deeper into the ideas. This is breathtaking cinema. And let's hope Fresnadillo gets a few more Spanish films in before Hollywood snaps him up.
