The Good Thief | ||||||
The film has a lively, stylish vibe to it that makes it both engaging and forgettable (a lot like Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven remake). It's complicated and fun to keep all the plot threads in focus, but there's nothing much made of the subtext involving a Russian teen prostitute (Kukhianidze) Bob befriends, or his group of long-time cohorts, some of whom only seem to be in the story to add colour to the film. At the centre, though, Nolte is fantastic, delivering a rare energetic and sharply comedic performance as a guy seemingly on the brink of oblivion but still at the top of his game. His scenes with Karyo are especially good fun, as are Kusturica's guitar-obsessed techie and the Polish twins' bizarre security guards. The entire ensemble works well together, and Jordan makes wonderful use of the setting. Yet while there's nothing wrong with the film, it simply never generates either the energy or depth to be anything more than just another efficient caper movie.
