This claims to be the first British film about university life--sex, drugs, partying and a bit of studying! But what a long, hard slog this film is. If university was really like this, no one would ever go. The central character is David (Robertson), a shy new student who's a little intimidated by his wild roommate Jack (Walton) and the lesbian girl Steph (Edmonstone) across the hall. But they become his close friends, Jack takes up with Steph's roommate (Vandenbergh), David's third-year cousin Marc (Harcourt-Smith) shows them the ropes. And then both Jack and Marc fall for the edgy, mysterious Nicole (Loustau).

Yeah whatever. What could have been an enjoyable romp through the first year at university is instead a dull, ponderous mess. Fisher's script isn't bad; there's some good dialog and the central theme about discovering yourself away from home and family is good. The cast is fresh-faced and natural, very believable. But the film itself has no sense of pace or vitality. Scenes drift aimlessly into one another with very little point, the ensemble cast is about five characters too big, and attempts to spice it all up with intertitles and wacky design never generate the badly needed drive, humour or, most disastrously, passion. There's a decent film hidden deep inside here somewhere, but what's on screen is hollow, shallow and ultimately lifeless.
